ICEbreaker News Briefs: Detention, Deportation, and Resistance
š§± ICEās detainee population reaches 66,000, a new record high, statistics show
ICEās custody numbers have surged to 66,000 ā the largest detainee population ever recorded ā under the intensified enforcement campaign of the current administration. This figure represents a nearly 70% increase since January 2025, when detention levels hovered around 39,000. Roughly half of those detained now have no criminal charges or convictions, revealing that civil-immigration violations, not criminal behavior, account for most of the surge. The expansion accompanies a massive increase in detention capacity, including new facilities and beds nationwide. ā CBS News
š Iranian Professor in Oklahoma Released 3 Days After His Detention by ICE
An Oklahoma-based professor, born abroad, was detained by ICE despite claiming legal status and years of teaching experience ā an incident that has alarmed academics nationwide, who worry that enforcement is targeting immigrants regardless of their social or economic contributions. āVahid Abedini, who colleagues said was in the United States on an H-1B visa, was arrested on his way to a conference in Washington. It was unclear why.ā The arbitrary detention has sent shockwaves through university communities, many of whom fear similar vulnerability. Advocacy groups are calling the case a dangerous precedent pointing to a broader crackdown on immigrants in professional and civic life. ā The New York Times
š Only 16 of over 600 detained by ICE in Chicago area have criminal histories, records show
Out of 607 people detained by ICE in a recent Chicago-area operation, only 16 ā about 2.6% ā were recorded as having criminal histories that constitute a āhigh public-safety risk.ā The vast majority were arrested despite having no criminal record, undermining the administrationās claim that enforcement focuses on āthe worst of the worst.ā Civil-rights advocates argue the arrests expose systemic overreach, wrongful detentions, and a blatant misalignment with public-safety justifications. ā CBS News
š Trump Vowed His Mass Deportation Efforts Would Target āthe Worst of the Worst.ā Hereās What the Data Shows
Contrary to promises that the crackdown would prioritize serious criminals, over 70% of people in ICE detention as of September 2025 had no criminal convictions ā many were held solely for civil-immigration violations. Among those with records, most fell short of violent offenses, with only a small fraction indicted for serious crimes. The data challenge the administrationās narrative, suggesting mass detentions target immigrants broadly rather than dangerous offenders. Experts warn the shift poses enormous risks to civil liberties and fuels stigmatization of immigrant communities. ā TIME

Urgent Calls to Action to hold ICE accountable:
When leaders escape accountability, it signals that powerānot justiceārules, eroding trust, fueling corruption, and opening the door to authoritarianism. Billionaire-backed justices and elites aren't serving the peopleātheyāre scheming to suppress our voices, strip away our rights, and rule over us. But progress and power to the people is more than an idea; itās a movement. By standing up, speaking out, and demanding dignity, opportunity, and justice for all, we can build an America that truly lives up to its promise.

ICEbreaker News: The Fight to End Cruelty, Detention, and Fear
ICE isnāt just a rogue agencyāitās part of a larger system of state violence that targets immigrants, tears families apart, and undermines our most basic human rights. Empowered by far-right lawmakers, ICE operates with impunity, weaponizing fear and surveillance to criminalize entire communities.
Fueled by anti-immigrant hate and backed by extremist agendas, ICE's operations reflect a broader push toward authoritarianism. Mass raids, indefinite detentions, secretive deportations, and collaboration with local police all feed into a system designed to intimidate, control, and erase. These tactics donāt make us saferāthey make us less free.
ICEās Pattern of Harm Includes:
Targeting immigrant families through mass raids and surveillance
Detaining asylum seekers in inhumane, for-profit facilities
Collaborating with local law enforcement to bypass sanctuary protections
Abusing detainees and violating basic rights and due process
Using fear to silence communities and suppress dissent
Advancing policies rooted in xenophobia and white nationalism
We Must Act:
ICE is not just enforcing lawsāitās violating them. Itās time to dismantle the cruelty, end the detentions, and protect our communities. We must organize, resist, and demand a future rooted in dignity, justice, and liberation for all.
Join us. Speak out. Hold ICE accountable. Together, we can break the cycle of fear.
