What’s Happening This Week With ICE and DHS Accountability
How many families must demand answers before government agencies are held accountable for what happens in their custody?
Today, a Maryland family is demanding an investigation into a loved one’s death. A U.S. citizen was injured during an ICE encounter in California. Federal investigators have identified gaps in body-camera oversight, and a prominent immigration case is seeking Supreme Court review.
Government power has limits. Human dignity is not optional. Accountability cannot wait.
When Government Power Expands, Accountability Cannot Wait
💔 Family Demands Answers After Man Dies in ICE Custody
Julian Curo Churata, a 47-year-old Maryland resident originally from Peru, died September 29 while in ICE custody in Louisiana. Now his wife wants answers about what happened.
Churata had been detained for approximately three months at Richwood Correctional Center. Hospital records identified cardiac arrest caused by septic shock.
His wife, Veronica Ramirez, says her husband had regularly called home before communication suddenly stopped. Records raise questions about the time between his reported medical emergency and arrival at the hospital.
His autopsy report remains pending. Advocates and lawmakers are calling for an independent investigation. Washington Post
Why we’re watching:
A death in government custody demands transparency.
Medical records, emergency response procedures, and detention records must be examined to determine whether Churata received appropriate care.
His family’s questions deserve answers, not silence.
🚨 ICE Agents Injure U.S. Citizen During California Detention
A U.S. citizen was hospitalized after a violent encounter with federal immigration agents in Long Beach, California.
Ricardo Gonzalez, a former city employee, was detained Saturday in a residential neighborhood. Videos show agents restraining him on the ground as he cried out that his arm was broken.
Local officials reported that Gonzalez sustained significant injuries and demanded an investigation.
Long Beach police confirmed they responded to the scene but did not participate in immigration enforcement.
The Department of Homeland Security had not publicly explained the circumstances of the encounter when the incident was reported. The Guardian
Why this matters:
A federal badge does not place an officer above the law.
Whether someone is a citizen or immigrant, government agents must be accountable for their use of force.
The public deserves an explanation, preservation of evidence, and an independent review.
📹 DHS Rejects Recommendation for Automatic ICE Body Cameras
A federal watchdog has identified serious weaknesses in how immigration agencies manage body-worn cameras.
The Government Accountability Office found that ICE and Customs and Border Protection have not adequately updated their camera program plans or established consistent operational guidance.
Investigators recommended additional safeguards, including technology that can automatically activate cameras during enforcement incidents.
The Department of Homeland Security accepted six of seven recommendations but rejected automated activation, citing privacy and operational concerns. Washington Post
Why we’re watching:
Camera footage can help establish what happened during disputed encounters, protect the public, and document officers’ actions.
Investigators warned that relying on manual activation increases the risk that critical incidents go unrecorded.
When agencies exercise force in our communities, reliable evidence should not depend solely on an officer remembering to press a button.
⚖️ Mahmoud Khalil Asks Supreme Court to Protect Judicial Review
Palestinian activist and lawful permanent resident Mahmoud Khalil asked the Supreme Court on October 19 to review a ruling affecting his ability to challenge immigration detention.
Khalil was arrested in March 2025 after participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. He spent 104 days in immigration custody before a federal judge ordered his release.
A federal appeals court subsequently ruled that the district court lacked authority to order his release before immigration proceedings were exhausted.
Khalil argues that his detention punished constitutionally protected speech. The administration has defended its immigration actions. Democracy Now
Why this matters:
The Supreme Court has not agreed to hear his petition.
The dispute raises a fundamental question: Can people obtain timely federal judicial review when they allege their detention violates constitutional rights?
💔 Why This Matters
A husband dies in government custody. A citizen is injured during an ICE encounter. Federal watchdogs warn that critical evidence may never be recorded. A lawful permanent resident asks the Supreme Court to protect judicial review.
Different stories. One urgent question.
Who holds government agents accountable when they harm the people they are supposed to serve?
No one should have to surrender their dignity, safety, or constitutional protections.
👀 What We’re Watching
Whether an independent investigation examines Churata’s death and medical treatment.
Whether ICE explains the Long Beach incident and provides relevant evidence.
How DHS responds to unresolved body-camera recommendations.
Whether the Supreme Court agrees to review Khalil’s petition.

💙 One Thing to Carry With Us
Friends,
When someone dies in government custody, their family deserves answers.
When federal agents injure someone in our communities, the public deserves an independent investigation.
When officials reject safeguards designed to document their actions, we have every right to demand stronger accountability.
And when someone’s freedom depends on the ability to challenge government detention, our courts must take constitutional protections seriously.
Our strength is in showing up, speaking out, demanding answers, and standing together.
Accountability does not weaken democracy. It protects it.
Human dignity is not conditional. Due process is not optional.
This is our moment to rise, resist, and reclaim our rights, freedoms, rule of law, and democracy.
The future is not lost. It is being built by us, right now.
